Our volunteers are at the heart of At Home in Alexandria. It’s time to celebrate the people who make AHA possible!

Join us for a fun fall evening of food, drinks, friendship, and gratitude on October 24 from 5–7 pm at the home of Lisa and Paul. Come enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine, and a non-alcoholic option while connecting with fellow AHA volunteers.

Most importantly, come ready to relax and allow us to say thank you for the time, talent, kindness, and care you give to our AHA community.

RSVP is required. Attendance is limited to 30 volunteers.

This is a AHA volunteer only invite. It is their round of applause so we respectfully ask that only AHA volunteers attend.

Morning Brew will take place at Paris Baguette, 4616 Kenmore Venue, Alexandria, VA, 22304.

The purpose of the Brew is to provide a welcoming table in a local coffee shop where both new and “seasoned” AHA members can stop by and just get to know one another better. Anyone is welcome to attend, including prospective new members. We do request that you register on the AHA Hub so we reserve enough seats.

The purpose of the Solo AHAer group is to provide a space for current AHA members who are solo agers to get together to socialize and discuss needs unique to solo agers.

Understanding Grief: An Educational Series

Grief touches every life—but it isn’t something we always feel comfortable talking about.

At Home in Alexandria invites you to join us for a three-part educational series exploring what grief is, how it impacts us, how grief can differ from person to person, and how we can better support ourselves and others through loss.

From understanding common myths about grief to exploring different experiences of loss, we’ll gain practical knowledge, tools, and perspective along the way. The series concludes with a Death Café, an open conversation about mortality and making the most of our finite lives, hosted by a clinical social worker.

You don’t have to be grieving to participate. Whether you’ve experienced a recent loss, want to better understand your own experiences with grief, or want to be there for someone you love, this series offers an opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect.

Join AHA members for Happy Hour at the home of Susan Pettey and Rollie Frye in Old Town. Address will be provided upon registration. Happy Hour is always a great opportunity to connect with AHA friends old and new.

As is typical with our happy hours, this will be potluck style. Please bring an appetizer (including a dish and serving utensil) and a beverage of your choosing.

Long-Term Care Roundtable Discussion

Planning Today for the Care You May Need Tomorrow

What does long-term care really mean? Where might you receive care, who will provide it, and how will you pay for it? Join At Home in Alexandria on November 12 at 1:00 p.m. for a Long-Term Care Roundtable Discussion hosted by AHA volunteer Anthony Grant, a long-term care advisor with PMCA Agency.

This small-group conversation is an opportunity to bring your questions, explore your options, and learn how planning ahead can help you prepare for future care needs while protecting your independence and financial resources. This is an open, educational discussion—not a sales presentation.

Join AHA and Duncan Library friends on Zoom for the Third Wednesday Book Club. This month’s selection is Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Stout.

Moving forward, the club will read a wide variety of books that are mutually agreed upon by the membership. The club reads fiction and nonfiction but tries to alternate between the two.

The person who suggests the book will lead the discussion of the book.

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the things we’re grateful for and the people who make life a little brighter. But for some, the holiday can feel a little quieter without family or friends nearby. At At Home in Alexandria, we believe no one should spend the holiday without loved ones and friends. If you don’t have plans this Thanksgiving, we invite you to join us for a warm meal, friendly conversation, and a little extra gratitude shared around the table. There’s always room for one more neighbor!
