As a senior I would be lost without AHA. When I call requesting assistance, they never fail to be there for me. I’m a widowed person and living alone. I often have depression and darn if an AHA staff member didn’t come to my home to check on me.

Two wonderful AHA volunteers go walking with me a couple times a week, and we’ve now become close and caring friends. One is a retired physical therapist and the other is a registered nurse. AHA gave a real powerhouse to me.

The staff, members and especially the volunteers are the best thing since apple pie and church on Sunday. I am forever grateful for AHA.

At Home in Alexandria is an incredible jewel! Our mom was very independent and understandably wanted to stay in her own home—near her friends and the life she built. Yet in her 90s, she began to need assistance with certain tasks, and our finding AHA was absolutely essential in allowing us to honor her desire to stay in her home. Not only did she appreciate all their help with driving and errands, but she enjoyed their webinars and, most importantly, made several wonderful friends along the way. She constantly raved about AHA and its people, and we will forever be grateful to this tremendous organization. Every city in the country should be so lucky to have such a dedicated, outstanding group.

I have a military background and I consider myself to be ‘tough as nails!’ Someone like me doesn’t find it easy to ask for help. But, this past year, with a turn of events that my husband and I experienced, we had no choice but to rely on others. The AHA volunteers were absolutely fantastic.

- AHA member Susan

I’m fortunate to have a son, daughter-in-law and two young grandsons who live in the area. They help whenever they can. But there are times when I just don’t want to rely on them. It has been a source of great comfort to them that I have the AHA community to lean on for some extra help

- AHA member Helen

With AHA, we have found there is no “tired” in being retired! We enjoy the fun social and educational events, making new friends, lending support to others, and being part of the best way to ‘age in place’ in Alexandria.”

- AHA members Maggie and Barry

“We thought we would meet nice people, but we were not expecting the great friendships we have made. We love being part of an engaging, welcoming community. We will never leave.”

- AHA members Steve and Pam
