Two Important Local Events

AHA is pleased to share information about two events coming up this month in Alexandria focused on the older adult community. First, AARP is offering the AARP Virginia Academy: Smarter Living for All Ages on Saturday, June 17 from 8:15am-3:00pm at the Lee Center at 1108 Jefferson Street in Alexandria. The agenda includes a keynote address by Tracey Gendron, a gerontologist at VCU, on ageism and how to create a “new lens” to challenge society’s longstanding view of aging as deterioration and decline. The day continues with sessions on brain health, Medicare 101, a Homefit workshop, and more. A shred truck will also be on hand – so bring those documents to be shredded from 8am-1pm. Click here for the agenda.

The second event is a Commission on Aging Speaker Series Event – Community Forum: Making Alexandria A Livable Community for Seniors – to be held Wednesday, June 21 from 10am-noon at the Beatley Central Library. Click for the flyer. Members of the Commission on Aging will talk about the latest progress for making Alexandria a more livable city for seniors, but will also be seeking input from attendees on suggestions for meeting that goal. RSVP to www.seniorservicesalex.org or call 703-836-4414, extension 110. This event is free and open to the public.
