Transportation Options

D.O.T. PARA-TRANSIT PROGRAM

DOT Para-transit provides safe, reliable, Americans with Disabilities (ADA)-compliant, curb-to-curb taxi service, seven days a week for residents of Alexandria unable, or who find it difficult, to use public transportation.

Trips must be scheduled no later than one day in advance and can be scheduled up to 14 days prior to the day of the trip.   There is a one-way fare of $3.00 for trips inside the City and up to 5 miles outside the City, and a one-way fare of $5.00 for trips 5 miles and over outside the City.

If you are interested in signing up for the DOT Para-transit program, fill out the application form and mail it to the address (or fax it to the number) on the document. Your eligibility status for the program will be mailed to you along with instructions on how to make reservations.

METROACCESS

MetroAccess is a shared-ride, door-to-door, paratransit service for people whose disability prevents them from using bus or rail.  The service provides daily trips throughout the entire Metropolitan region.  It accepts Metrorail fare cards as a form of payment.

To qualify, you must complete an application and participate in a functional assessment to determine which services best meet your needs.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY ROAD TO RECOVERY PROGRAM

FREE.  This program provides transportation to and from treatment for people who have cancer and do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves.

Patients must be travelling to an appointment required to begin or complete cancer treatment, or to an appointment for complementary therapy during cancer treatment.  Transportation cannot be provided for follow-up appointments after treatment has been completed.  Patients must be ambulatory, able to walk unassisted to and from the vehicle, or have an accompanying caregiver to assist.  A 4-business day advance notice is required; not including the date transportation is needed.

To schedule a ride, call the National Cancer Information Center at (800) 227-2345.  Rides are dependent on volunteer driver availability.

MEDICAID TRANSPORTATION SERVICE (LOGISTICARE)

FREE.  If you have Medicaid, you may be eligible for Non-Emergency Medicaid Transportation. This service will take you to Medicaid-covered medical and health care appointments. Rides are given 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Call the LogistiCare Call Center at 1-866-386-8331 at least five days in advance of your appointment. When you call, be ready with:

  • your Medicaid number
  • date and time
  • pick-up and drop-off address

ALEXANDRIA YELLOW TAXI CAB

Dispatch service to taxicabs that provide immediate service; 24-hour notice required for wheelchair lift vans.  Call (703) 549-2500.

DIAMOND TRANSPORTATION SERVICES

Para-transit service with wheelchair accessible vans, services for persons with intellectual disabilities and shuttle buses.  Call (703) 912-7606.

DASH BUS/ALEXANDRIA TRANSIT COMPANY

DASH PASS of $40.00 is loaded onto a SMART TRIP CARD. The DASH system provides bus service within the City of Alexandria, and connects with Metrobus, Metrorail, Virginia Railway Express, and all local bus systems.   All DASH buses are wheelchair accessible.

KING STREET TROLLEY

FREE. The trolley runs daily every 15 minutes between the King Street Metrorail Station and the Potomac River waterfront.

Sunday – Wednesday: 10:00 a.m. – 10:15 p.m.

Thursday – Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – Midnight
